The Pastoral Ministry will never be the same!

Soon we will be having a vacant chair in our offices. At the end of this month Cathy Daharsh and her family will move to Dubuque, Iowa, and Wartburg Seminary. The church will never be the same! Cathy has brought energy, vision, creativity and organization to her position as Director of Youth and Family Ministry. She also has brought a wonderful sense of humor and a playfulness that the children and youth have responded to with great affection and appreciation. She has worked hard to ground our children and youth in the gospel of grace and truth, giving them a means to develop a foundation which will guide their whole lives. Cathy has emphasized a relational style of ministry with our children and youth, knowing that the gospel is best communicated through the example and witness of people who love and care for our children and youth. She loves Jesus and she loves our young people – and it shows in all she does. The church will never be the same without her – because she is a unique child of God herself, bringing unique gifts and perspectives, fun and joy, hope and trust, always believing that the young people are a precious gift of God.

It’s also true that the pastoral ministry will never be the same when she enters the ordained ministry. Not only will there be a whole lot more joy and fun, humor and energy in the ordained roster, but the pastoral office will have a talented, bright, committed, thoughtful woman in ministry who is filled with compassion and a pastoral heart. The ELCA will be most fortunate to include her in its ranks.

As we heard last Sunday from Pastor Howard Knox who came from our church, as he celebrated his 50 th anniversary of ordination, First United has throughout its history been generous in supporting its members who have gone to seminary and entered the ordained ministry. We are privileged now to have both Pres Hoffman and Cathy Daharsh studying for the ordained ministry. We have a special separate fund to provide financial support for our seminary students. With tuition and book costs at over $11,000 a year, I hope you will respond with your generosity in giving to the seminary scholarship fund so these students and their families will have less burden in pursuing this important work of bringing the gospel to people. God bless you as you respond to the seminary scholarship fund.

Pastor Karl

Education Needed

The personnel committee is looking for applicants for two positions on our church staff. One is a full-time position with benefits for Director of Children and Family Education for children, birth through grade 6 and their families. The other is for the Director of Middle and High School Education. This is a part-time position, averaging 20 hours per week, without personnel benefits. We are seeking people with an education or teaching background. If you are interested in applying, please send your resume and a list of references to the church office, attention Pastor Karl.

Worship Café: A Unique Summer Worship Experience

Marina Ministry has not only changed its name, but it has changed its location! Summer worship now takes place in St. Andrew Lutheran Church’s courtyard, 1711 S. 11 th Street, which has been transformed into an outdoor café, complete with refreshments! We gather with the other ELCA churches in Sheboygan and Sheboygan Falls at 6:30 p.m. every Thursday evening throughout the summer to worship God and to enjoy fellowship with one another. (Please bring your own lawn chair!)

VIL Picnic

The annual VIL Picnic will take place on Monday, July 11, at 11:00 a.m. in fellow-ship hall, featuring brats and hamburgers served with baked beans and potato salad. Prior to lunch, you’re invited to bring wrapped “white elephant” gift (NO new items, please!) for an exchange game! Call the church office and indicate the number of brats and hamburgers you plan to eat to help the committee prepare!

May we also remind you to return your VIL survey to the VIL Planning Committee as soon as possible regarding your interest in an overnight trip. Please bring your survey to the church office. Thank you!

Worship Café Volunteers

First United will be hosting the Worship Café on the Thursdays of June 23, July 14, and August 18. On those dates we will need coffee hostesses, ushers, bakers, and set-up people. Please sign up on the kiosk in the coming weeks. Thank you!

BEFRIENDERS

Befrienders are lay men and women who commit time to be available as listening and supportive friends. They provide friendship and love to people who are experiencing any of life’s transitions. If you would like to spend time with a Befriender from First United, please contact Deaconess Deb.

(Wanted)

Clothes for the Needy

We continue to collect new and gently used children’s clothing, sizes infant to pre-teen, including coats, shoes, and all kinds of everyday and Sunday clothing. Donated items will go to the children of Wellington Park Lutheran Church, Milwaukee, and to their Clothing Pantry, which serves 35-60 families each month. Pastor Howard Fintzen, a member of First United, is serving as interim pastor at Wellington Park.

Please bring all items to the designated area in the gathering area. All items must be CLEAN, UNSTAINED, and in VERY GOOD CONDITION! Thank you!

Do we have your email address?

We now live in a computer age, and just about everyone receives mail, pays bills, corresponds, etc., via email. First United has the capability of sending the Good News to your email address, but only if you wish to receive it that way. If you are interested, please contact the church office and give us your email address!

Do you know someone who could use a Prayer Shawl?

Many beautiful prayer shawls and lap blankets have been given to individuals suffering from long-term illnesses or disabilities, recovering from surgery, or who are struggling with an especially difficult time in their life. If you know of someone in a similar situation who would appreciate receiving a prayer shawl or lap blanket, please contact Deaconess Deb (452-2401).

If you are a Holy Knitter and would like to make winter hats, mittens and scarves, please contact Deaconess Deb for a pattern. These will be given to Adopt a Family, and to local schools for children in need.

The “Holy Knitters” meet as a group on the second and fourth Mondays of the month, at 5:00 p.m. in Room 8. Anyone is welcome to come and join us!

We want this ministry to continue and grow. Please consider supporting this ministry with a financial gift. A gift of $11.00 can purchase enough yarn for one more prayer shawl! Your financial support is very much appreciated! Please make checks out to First United Lutheran Church, and write “Holy Knitters” on the envelope. Thank you!

~ Deaconess Deb

Help us out!

Please take a moment to check the lost and found in the corridor on the east side of the gathering area to see if any lost items belong to you! Thank you!

Global Mission Events Summer 2005

Come and celebrate God’s grace in the world at this summer’s Global Mission Events.

Global Mission Events are the ELCA’s premiere summer events, where congregations, families, youth and seniors discover a global community of God’s grace. Challenging speakers from all over the world and engaging Global University sessions will sharpen your sense of God’s mission and open new opportunities for participation.

A Global Mission Event is an adventure, a family reunion full of new faces and challenging ideas, a unique occasion to have fun and learn together with other mission-minded Christians.

This year’s Global Mission Events will be held July 14-17 at North Dakota State University, Fargo, North Dakota, and August 25-28 at the Baltimore Convention Center, Baltimore, Maryland. Check the kiosk for more information. You may also register on-line at www.elca.org/gme.

SCIO 2nd Annual Bike-a-Thon

The Sheboygan County Interfaith Organization Bike-a-Thon will be held on Sunday, June 26, beginning and ending at Salem UCC Church, 217 Salem Drive, Plymouth. Christmas in July

Beginning in July, you will find a Christmas tree in the gathering area of our church. On the tree will be ornaments that have a school supply item written on it. Please consider taking on of those ornaments, purchasing that particular item, and place it under the tree. These items purchased through your generosity will help needy children in the Sheboygan area!
